An effective method for testing the color of LEDs

Single LED Detector FINN®

The FINN® detector is an economical solution for detecting the color of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Very compact in size, it fits into standard test interfaces and allows for the control of the color of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, bi-color, and clear LEDs. It is particularly suitable for testing LEDs located on the edge of a board and surface-mounted LEDs on a printed circuit board.

The FINN® consists of a photosensitive semiconductor and an optical filter. The filter is designed to allow light emitted at the target wavelength (color) to pass through and to block light whose wavelength falls outside the target limits.

The detector produces a current when excited by the wavelength of the target color. This current generates a voltage across the bias resistor, which is then measured by the target test system.

The test is easy to adjust and manage, as it uses resources from the tester that the engineer is already familiar with. There are no potentiometers to adjust. Setting the lower and upper limits in an analog test instruction is all that is needed to support most applications.

Moreover, the detector is very compact, allowing for easy installation in the mounting device next to the LED. Generally, it is not necessary to equip the device with optical fibers. Since the detector does not require power, only two cables are needed per detector. It would be possible to use a common return in applications with a high number of LEDs, in order to reduce the cable requirements to one per detector plus one for the common return.

Mega FINN™ performs measurements in 3 milliseconds for most LEDs. Detecting 2,000 different shades, from blue (400 nm) to red (700 nm), even in the most challenging test environments (e.g., noisy signals, ambient light, low-intensity LEDs), the Mega FINN™ detector quickly obtains accurate results. Thanks to its new program, the results are not distorted: thus, there is no need to mask or block ambient lighting.

The Mega FINN™ detector is also very effective for flashing LEDs (at 50 Hz or more) and for high to very low intensity. It determines the color and intensity of the tested LED, converting it into an easily readable signal that allows for comparison of LEDs and other light sources. The Mega FINN™ indicates a frequency in kHz that qualifies the color of the LED, and the same signal quantifies the intensity of the LED by measuring its pulse width (average DC voltage).

TheFINNtrometer™features a custom assembly made up of multi-color sensors and a microprocessor. Here’s how it works:

    • Separate optical cables: Each optical cable, equipped with a push-in connector, connects to numbered ports on the module. The other end of the cable has a metal tip that is placed in front of or above the LED to be tested.
    • Cable number control: When a command is sent for a specific cable, the module identifies the relevant cable and measures the color and/or intensity of the corresponding LED.
    • Results feedback: The module then transmits the measurement via the chosen interface (USB, serial, etc.), allowing for visualization and recording of the results.

This process allows for the efficient testing of multiple LEDs without manual intervention for each component, ensuring speed and accuracy in production environments.
